Milk is not only a component of a healthy diet, but also of many skincare cosmetics. It was valued already in antiquity when milk baths were one of the beauty treatments for the well-born. Our grandmothers used milk as a base for cleansing masks and compresses soothing a sunburn. What properties does milk have and what are the effects of cosmetics with this ingredient? How to prepare a milk bath? Here are my recipes for cosmetics with milk, such as a toner, a moisturising and anti-acne face mask, a moisturising hair rinse and a dry hand treatment.
Milk – cosmetic properties
Milk contains antioxidants that fight free radicals and slow down the skin’s aging processes. In addition, it is rich in a number of minerals, such as calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, and vitamins, especially A, D, E and B. It is thanks to such ingredients that determine its beneficial cosmetic properties that improve the appearance of our face, body and hair.
The manufactures most often make use of cow’s milk, goat’s milk, sheep’s milk, and mare milk. Regardless of the origin, milk is a source of protein, which is a natural building block of all organisms. In addition, proteins stimulate the production of elastin, collagen and hyaluronic acid, so the substances that make the skin hydrated and elastic. Thanks to fatty acids, milk regenerates the skin and rebuilds the natural lipid layer of the skin. Lactic acid, one of the AHA acids, exfoliates dead skin, minimises pores, lightens the skin and has antibacterial properties, which is why it is often used for acne skin. What is more, the pH of milk is close to the pH of human skin so it is perfect for sensitive and delicate skin as it does not irritate or sensitize it.
Cosmetics with milk – effects of use
I love cosmetics with milk and I use them very often. After each use I observe how my skin becomes firm and smooth with even, slightly brightened colour. Since lactic acid has an anti-acne and exfoliating effect, milk is frequently used in products for oily, acne and discolored skin. In the case of hair care, milk is responsible for strengthening, moisturising and elasticity of our hair. Goat’s milk, which has a higher fat content and is thicker, is usually used for the care of mature and anti-wrinkle skin. For this reason, it is added to body lotions and hand creams with thicker formulas.
How to prepare a milk bath?
A real bath in milk would be difficult to prepare and rather expensive, but it is enough to add about two liters of milk to experience the benefits of milk. Soak for about 15-20 minutes. I can also recommend you to add your favourite essential oil or dried rose petals. If your skin is in need of intensive hydrating, you can add 3 tablespoons of natural honey.
After the bath, I rinse my whole body with water. The result is silky smooth skin.
My recipes for milk-based cosmetics
Face toner
I apply milk toner with the use of a cotton pad every day after removing my make-up. Once I apply it to the whole face, I wait a few minutes. At this time, the toner invisibly exfoliates and minimizes the pores. Then I wash my face and apply a moisturising cream. Already after a week of such regular use, you can see the effects in the form of even colour, shrink pores and reduced pimples.
Moisturising face mask
I pour 2 tablespoons of oatmeal into a bowl and add half a glass of milk. After 30 minutes, I strain the flakes and pour out the liquid. I apply the paste to my face and leave it for 15 minutes. The flakes can be blended to make it easier to spread the mask on the face, but this is not necessary. The face mask leaves the face smoother, radiant and highlightighted.
Moisturising hair rinse
I wash my hair with shampoo, then I rinse it slowly in cool, high-fat milk. After 10 minutes, I rinse my hair with water. Thanks to this, my hair is shiny, smooth and moisturised.
Treatment for dry hands
I heat up 2 cups of milk and add 2 tablespoons of honey. When the milk cools down, I pour it into a bowl and soak my hands in it. As a result, the skin becomes smooth and hydrated.
